Steve McKeithen was born on March 17, 1952, in Harris County, Texas. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science in 1976 from the University of Houston. In 1984, he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree from South Texas College of Law. In 1989, he left private practice and joined the Montgomery County Attorney's Office as a prosecutor. In 1992, he was appointed the Civil Division Chief of that office. He was elected to the position of Chief Justice in 2002.
Judge McKeithen married the former Sherry Holland in August 1970, and they have two children, Sarah and Seth. Sherry is an eighth-grade math teacher at Montgomery Junior High.
